Post 9/11 GI Bill News: The Post-9/11 GI Bill, called the most substantial improvement to veterans' education benefits since World War II, went live this week. The new GI Bill featuring a generous housing stipend, tuition payments, $1,000 per year for books and supplies and more, should make college life a lot easier for most veterans. Those who have served on active duty for 90 or more days since Sept. 10, 2001 are eligible to receive the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. The new package offers a number of new valuable benefits, but figuring out exactly what you qualify for is confusing. There are many differences in payment rates depending on where you go to school and where you live. VA Now Accepting GI Bill Transfers: The Defense Department is now accepting registrations to transfer service members' Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to their spouses or children. Service members can apply online at the Transfer of Education Benefits website. The website is accessible using a common access card, Defense Department self-service user identification or a Defense Finance and Accounting Service personal identification number. Defense officials ask those whose families won't use the benefits for the upcoming fall semester to hold off registering until mid-July so applicants who need immediate attention can get processed first.
